Carbon fiber, known as the "king of new materials", is a new chemical material that is both "lighter" and "harder" than steel. Its low specific gravity and high strength make it suitable for use in wind power blades, aerospace, sports and leisure, It is widely used in automobile and other fields. In the process of my country's progress toward the goal of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, carbon fiber is expected to be widely used in new energy, equipment manufacturing and other fields, and related chemical companies will usher in new opportunities for transformation and development.

"Under the'dual carbon' goal, the two major carbon emission areas of energy and industry have a greater demand for new materials." Xu Lianghua, a professor at Beijing University of Chemical Technology, said that carbon fiber composite materials are used in wind power, photovoltaics, nuclear energy equipment and industrial lightweighting. Extensive application can play a leading role, and the development prospects are broad.

Chen Xinwei, President of China Chemical Fiber Industry Association, believes that my country's carbon fiber industry has gradually entered a stage of benign development. Under the "dual carbon" goal, wind power, photovoltaics, hydrogen energy and other industries are developing rapidly, and there is a strong demand for carbon fiber, and the carbon fiber market has a broad space.

Data shows that the total amount of global carbon fiber applications has maintained growth for many years in a row. In 2020, affected by the epidemic, it will still achieve a growth rate of 3%, reaching 106,900 tons. my country's carbon fiber market is growing strongly, showing a prosperous scene. In 2019, the output exceeded 10,000 tons, and the total application volume was 37,800 tons; in 2020, the output was 18,000 tons and the total application volume was 48,900 tons, a year-on-year increase of 29%. At present, the annual growth rate of my country's total carbon fiber application has exceeded 20% for four consecutive years. In 2020, the domestic carbon fiber market will account for 38%, an increase of 6 percentage points year-on-year.

Jilin Chemical Fiber Group was founded in 1960. It was originally a chemical fiber enterprise producing textile raw materials. In 2006, it decided to develop domestic carbon fiber through market research. Relying on the acrylic fiber production technology experience and an innovative team composed of university experts, the company produced the first batch of carbon fiber upstream product precursors in 2007 through more than 70 technical improvements, equipment transformations and hundreds of repeated trials. Obtained two national invention patents in two years, and developed into an important enterprise in the domestic carbon fiber industry.

In the past two years, under the two-wheel drive of technology and market, Jilin Chemical Fiber Group has increased its carbon fiber research and development and project construction progress, with an annual output of 15,000 tons of carbon fiber projects, 150,000 tons of carbon fiber precursor projects, and 12,000 tons of carbon fiber composite materials. Projects and other 200,000-ton carbon fiber full-industry chain projects have started construction and have reached production successively, and carbon fiber production capacity has continued to increase. At the same time, Jilin Chemical Fiber Group continues to extend the R&D and manufacturing fields of carbon fiber composite products. The products have realized the advantages of green power and new energy such as aerospace, wind power, photovoltaics, lightweight automobiles, rail transit, building reinforcement, sports and leisure, etc. cover.

Song Dewu, chairman of Jilin Chemical Fiber Group, believes that under the "dual carbon" goal, the development trend of new energy, lightweight, energy saving and consumption reduction will be stronger. It is expected that the demand for carbon fiber will show a spurt of growth in the next three to five years.

In 2020, while the domestic carbon fiber market demand is strong, more than 60% of the supply will still come from imports. In order to make up for the gap in domestic production, large-scale carbon fiber projects in Shanghai, Jilin, Qinghai and other provinces have started or put into production since the beginning of this year. Chen Xinwei believes that after nearly 20 years of development and accumulation, domestic carbon fiber technology has been able to play an important role in my country's economic and social development.

Of the total global carbon fiber applications in 2020, wind power, aerospace, sports and leisure, and automobiles accounted for 29%, 15%, 14%, and 12%, respectively. In my country’s total applications, the above four accounted for 40.9%. , 3.5%, 29.1%, 2%. According to Wei Huazhen, chief engineer of the No. 53 Research Institute of China North Industries Group, in comparison, the development of new energy has a significant impact on the carbon fiber industry, and automobiles and civil aviation will be the application markets for my country's carbon fiber growth.

In the energy field, weight reduction of wind power blades, photovoltaic panels and consumables manufacturing, hydrogen energy pressure vessels, nuclear energy equipment... The application of carbon fiber composite materials in the new energy field has been relatively popular, and the proportion of applications will continue to increase through technological progress, which will become a driving force for carbon fiber The "ballast stone" that is in rapid growth in demand. Song Dewu introduced that about 60% of the carbon fiber production capacity of Jilin Chemical Fiber Group this year will be used in the wind power field, and most of the rest will be used in the photovoltaic and hydrogen energy fields.

In the automotive field, whether it is a traditional fuel vehicle or a new energy vehicle, the body, frame, transmission shaft and other important components are in urgent need of new materials to reduce weight and consumption. Carbon fiber is one of the best choices. There are a large number of mainstream automobile manufacturers at home and abroad. There are more and more high-end new models using carbon fiber composite materials. Data show that the global automotive sector will use 12,500 tons of carbon fiber in 2020, which is nearly 18 times that of 2004, and it is expected to increase to 18,300 tons by 2024.

In addition, more important transportation equipment such as civil passenger planes, drones, high-speed rails, and subways, more products using carbon fiber composite materials have come out one after another. Wei Huazhen said that the future low-cost technological revolution will greatly increase the demand for carbon fiber in the transportation sector.

Chen Xinwei believes that although my country's overall carbon fiber technology level has entered the international advanced ranks, its maturity still needs to be further improved. The relative weakness of individual key equipment, important raw materials and supporting materials, as well as the relatively weak testing and evaluation links, has become an important factor hindering the development of my country's carbon fiber industry; In the future, the carbon fiber industry should improve product quality consistency, batch stability, and application processability, and expand its applications in aerospace, new energy, rail transit, high-end equipment, automobiles and other fields.
