The characteristics of Polypropylene Staple Fibers and their applications in various fields
Polypropylene Staple Fibers are synthetic fibers produced by spinning from isotactic polypropylene obtained through the polymerization of propylene. In China, they are known as "polypropylene". The production process of these fibers mostly employs porous, low-speed, and continuous short-spun technology, allowing for the production of fluffy fibers of specified denier and length for various applications.
From a physical performance perspective, Polypropylene Staple Fibers have several notable characteristics. Their density is approximately 0.91 g/cm, making them lightweight fibers. In terms of strength, short fibers typically reach 4-6 grams per denier, and their wet strength and dry strength are generally consistent. Additionally, this type of fiber exhibits excellent wear resistance and chemical resistance, a desirable rebound rate, and antibacterial and non-biting properties, which give it an advantage in certain specific environments.
In terms of moisture absorption and dyeing, the moisture regain of Polypropylene Staple Fibers is relatively low, and common dyes are not easily absorbed. In actual production, the pre-dyeing method, which involves dyeing the raw liquid before spinning, is often used. The pigment formulation is uniformly mixed with the polypropylene chips in a screw extruder to produce colored fibers. This method offers higher color fastness.
Polypropylene Staple Fibers have a wide range of applications. In industrial uses, due to their high strength and resistance to acids and alkalis, they are widely used in the production of geotextiles, which can effectively reinforce engineering projects such as dams and highways on soft soil foundations. Rope, fishing nets, filter cloths, and concrete reinforcement materials are also major application directions. In the decorative field, needle-punched carpets and automotive interior materials made of polypropylene short fibers have strong coverage and are easy to clean. In the clothing and hygiene sectors, fine denier polypropylene short fibers have a wicking effect, which can transfer sweat and keep the skin dry, and are suitable for sportswear or underwear fabrics. Additionally, in the non-woven fabric field such as disposable hygiene products and mask fabrics, Polypropylene Staple Fibers are also widely used as raw materials.
